Social Activities for Seniors

Why Social Activities Matter for Seniors

Staying socially connected is one of the most important parts of healthy aging. Regular conversation, shared activities, and time with peers give older adults a sense of purpose and belonging. For many families, finding social activities for seniors who live alone or who spend most days at home becomes a priority as a parent or spouse begins to withdraw from friends, hobbies, and community life.

If you are a family caregiver, you may be worried about how to help an elderly parent make friends or stay engaged when mobility, health, or transportation make that harder. You are not alone, and there are options that fit around your loved one’s needs.

Signs Your Loved One May Be Isolated or Lonely

Social isolation in older adults is easy to miss, especially when you don’t see your loved one every day. Common signs include:

  • Turning down invitations or stopping activities they used to enjoy
  • Spending most of the day alone, watching TV, or sleeping
  • Changes in mood, such as sadness, irritability, or withdrawal
  • Less attention to grooming, meals, or the home
  • Talking mostly about the past or saying they feel like a burden
  • Calling you more often – or not at all

Loneliness in elderly parents can look different from person to person. If you notice several of these signs, it may be time to look at senior day programs or other ways to bring more connection into their week.

Social Activities Through Great Lakes PACE

Great Lakes PACE helps seniors live in their own homes and communities while receiving the care and support they need. Social connection is part of that support. Participants can take part in group activities with peers, [activity examples: confirm with program staff], and time spent with a care team that gets to know them.

For seniors with limited mobility, memory changes, or chronic health conditions, PACE helps to make participation still possible.

How Great Lakes PACE Keeps Seniors Connected

Our PACE center is more than a place to receive medical care. Many participants attend our adult day health center in Saginaw several days a week where social time is built into the day alongside medical care, therapy, and meals.

At our adult day center, your loved one can:

  • Meet and build friendships with other seniors
  • Join group activities suited to their abilities and interests
  • Share meals with others instead of eating alone
  • See familiar faces on a regular schedule, which many seniors find comforting
  • Receive care from a team that knows their routines and preferences

Transportation to and from the center is available for participants which removes one of the biggest barriers to getting out of the house.
