How to Talk With a Parent About Their Mental Health

How to talk with an aging parent about their mental health

Many older adults grew up in a time when mental health was not openly discussed. If you are wondering how to talk to an elderly parent about depression, a few approaches can help:

  • Pick a calm, private moment. Avoid raising it during stress or in front of others.
  • Start with what you’ve noticed. “I’ve noticed you seem tired and haven’t been seeing your friends. I’m worried about you.”
  • Listen more than you advise. Let them describe what they are feeling in their own words.
  • Avoid labels and blame. Focus on how they feel, not on what is “wrong.”
  • Offer a next step. Suggest talking with their care team or doctor together.

If your parent resists, that is common. Stay patient, keep the door open, and try again another day.
